When more than half of their 32-truck fleet is Hino, it’s pretty fair to say that City Contractors is a fan. Doing work throughout the wider Auckland area, City Contractors have been in business for nearly 20 years and in that time have done more than 100 million dollars worth of water main, fire main, road and park improvements.
“10 years ago we recognised we needed to pick our game up, and we’ve been working to be the best of the best ever since,” says Mark Bason, City Contractor’s Managing Director and owner. One of the steps that came out of that was a full-scale fleet replacement programme, shifting away from second-hand trucks to new Hino trucks. They’ve now purchased six new 300 Series Hinos, a mix of 717 and 917 models.
“Reliability is the key – 15 years ago we had a very old fleet. Now with the new fleet repairs and maintenance costs are well down, we just don’t have that continuous cost. They’re good strong trucks and well built, plus good value for money.“
Most of the new water main trucks are for a single driver, so Mark has the drivers consult directly with their body fitter – Murray at Eastern Motor Bodies – on what they need. They’re built specifically for the industry – and fitted out with work lights, warning lights, tool body and roller doors, generators and various specialised welder units. They also have Hino’s standard safety features – reversing camera, disk brakes, traction control, hill start assist, dual airbags, and driver’s suspension seat for comfort.
“The hill start assist is quite good – it makes sure that if the truck is loaded up with a digger, it isn’t going to roll backwards. Plus the DPF burn system is eco-friendly with lower emissions, so we’re not polluting the atmosphere as much and complying with international standards.”
When they do have to do maintenance work, it’s easy – Mark heads to Truckstops. As Hino’s nationwide aftersales partner, they’re experts in servicing Hinos and are the authorised distributor for genuine Hino parts. This means that the fleet stays in tip-top shape and is serviced to Hino’s recommended specifications.
“One of our key goals is to be the most professional water main company in Auckland – if not New Zealand. So having first-rate gear, new trucks and the Hino brand behind us helps put that idea forward. I went to a reunion with contractors on the weekend and there were a lot of comments on our new trucks running around town, so it’s definitely nice for our marketing.”
“We’re committed to buying Hino. We like the brand and the company, and they’re always easy to deal with. Plus the guys like driving them – one driver asked me the other day ‘When can I join team Hino?’ He’s seen the new trucks and wants one for himself!”
