The truck is fitted with an automated coning machine known as “Conan”, designed to remove the need for team members to work from the back of a moving vehicle while cones are being deployed.

For Fleet & Asset Manager Dave Murray, the decision to automate came from reviewing TrafficSafe’s own incident history and identifying an opportunity to reduce risk.

“We looked through our records and found that we had a high number of injuries and incidents take place on the back of the vehicles. So we figured, let’s eliminate that risk and actually automate the system.”

That focus on innovation also influenced the choice of truck.

TrafficSafe has operated Hino diesel vehicles for many years, giving the business a strong base of fleet data to compare against. According to Dave, its Hino Hybrid vehicles have delivered a major reduction in overall fuel costs.

“Now that we’ve got the Hino vehicles in our fleet, we’ve found that there’s been a 30-32% reduction in fuel cost per 100km, so that just adds up to money.”
